Lancaster-based fantasy author A.S. Chambers is currently running a Kickstarter for his latest book, Bobby Normal and the Black Dragon – and hit target within just fifteen minutes of launch.

Bobby Normal and the Black Dragon, featuring cover art by Liam Shaw, is the fifth and final outing for a heroic young orphan before his world collides with that of Chambers long-running success, paranormal investigator Sam Spallucci.

“We see our plucky teenager pitting his wits against a sentient ocean that surrounds reality, an army of clay-based golems and the decimator of humanity, the Black Dragon himself, Kanor,” says Chambers, a popular presence at comic and fantasy events across the UK.

If you’re new to this series of novellas set in the ever-expanding Spallucciverse, then do not despair! There is also an omnibus up for grabs. The Adventures of Bobby Normal contains all five outings for Bobby and his varying companions including angels, vampires and one grouchy construct. Journey with him from obscurity in the tiny village of Irlingbury as he is drawn ever deeper into the web of rebellion and deception in the Divergent Lands as beings human and supernatural struggle to throw off the yoke of Kanor, the individual who reduced humanity to a mere tenth of its original size.

As well as the Bobby Normal books, there will also be other books on offer as add-ons. The Casebook of Sam Spallucci was Lancaster’s master of the macabre, A.S. Chambers very first outing for his paranormal investigator and contains five fantastical cases from his first week on the job. The Children of Cain is an omnibus of vampire stories set in the same universe as Bobby Normal.

“It would be a great read if you wanted to know more about these side characters that crop up in his world,” says Chambers.

A.S.Chambers, aka Austin Chambers is a an author of horror and urban fantasy, the top-hatted creator of the long-suffering whiskey drinking, chain-smoking Sam C Spallucci – investigator of the paranormal and all things weird. He lives in Lancaster, England, which is where he bases the stories centred around his main creation.

The first outing for Sam was The Casebook of Sam Spallucci, published in 2012, where the poor chap suffered such unfortunate tasks as babysitting a new born vampire, tracking down an angst-ridden poltergeist in a local high school and overcoming a lycanthropic zoo-keeper as it bayed for his blood.

Austin has created a fascinating universe of characters over the past twelve years, and surely it’s only a matter of time before some film or TV producer cottons on to his work, its ideal real-world location for filming, and gives him a call.

John Freeman

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
