Happy Birthday, 2000AD! From art droid Nigel Dobbyn

Name: Nigel Dobbyn

Blog or web site: www.nigeldobbyn.com

Currently working on:

The Power of Five: Nightrise graphic novel for Walker Books, The Chili for Markosia (www.the-chili.com), due to be published in February and available at the London Super Comicon.

First memory of 2000AD?

Issue 1 with its free Space Spinner. I particularly loved Belardinelli’s art on Dan Dare. He’s still a big influence.

Favourite Character or Story?

The Gronk, Ro-Jaws, Dirty Frank (I guess I like underdogs!)

What do you like most about the 2000AD?

Its unpredictability and wide embracing of different styles of artwork.

What would you most like to see in 2000AD as it heads to its Forties?

I’d like to see them employ me again!

If you worked on 2000AD, do you have an anecdote you’d like to share about your experience of Tharg and his minions?

Very excited and eager, I turned up at the 2000AD offices for the first time to discuss my doing my first full series, only to find out that The Mighty One was off work ill with Space Flu. No-one had thought to tell me. I turned around and headed home again! Thankfully, I managed to meet up with him and Hilary Robinson the next week and it was the start of many happy years of work.

• This post is one in a series of tributes to 2000AD to mark its 35th birthday on 26th February 2012. More about 2000AD at http://www.2000adonline.com/
