Here’s my pick of this week’s list of British creator and British publisher-skewed new comics, including new comics on sale in UK newsagents. This feature covers all titles released from Monday 4th April onwards with most new US comics released on Wednesday 6th April. (Do note that some US comics may be on sale later in the week due to Easter).
Top of your pick list from comic shops, if you haven’t already bought it, has to be Goldtiger from 2000AD, released last month in book shops. As we previously reported, this fabulous “faux” newspaper strip (or is it?) is the work of Guy Adams and Jimmy Broxton. The book marks the first time 2000AD has published a new work not previously serialised in the publisher’s weekly and monthly anthologies.
Begun as a Kickstarter campaign, this love-letter to the British newspaper adventure strips of the 20th Century is a fascinating and full-bloodied mix of Modesty Blaise and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier Clay. 2000AD happily gets caught up in the whole conceit of this being a “real” strip (which it might be…) in this fabulous collection. Recommended.
Also look out for the second Giant Days Trade Paperback from Boom!, written by John Allison with art from Lissa Treiman and Max Sarin. In this latest collection, Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends because their dorm rooms were next to each other. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of hand-wringing boys, “personal experimentation,” influenza, mystery mold, nuchauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of “academia,” they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive…

As usual, don’t forget that despite some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.
Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.
Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Goldtiger: Poseidon Complex Trade Paperback
Writer: Guy Adams Artist/ Cover Artist: Jimmy Broxton
Antonio Barreti and Louis Shaeffer’s Goldtiger, the iconic 60s comic strip that never was… until now! An obscure Italian artist and a down-to-earth British writer, worlds apart in both taste and ideology, came together to create a rival to Modesty Blaise that has lived in infamy. The duo’s adventures of Lily Gold and Jack Tiger were ultimately deemed too sensational for the nation’s newspaper pages and the strip was cancelled before it even ran. This enthralling book presents ‘The Poseidon Complex’, the complete serial, lifting the lid on comics’ most unsung creation and includes letters, scripts, interviews and sketches – all documenting the creation of the strip and the
outlandish lives of its creators.
It also presents ‘Goldtiger 2000’, offered to (but refused by) 2000AD for its launch in 1977 and details Barreti’s continued refusal to let his groundbreaking ideas die, even if nobody wanted to publish them.
