Two new paintings for one lucky winner to pick from this month in artist Graeme Neil Reid’s September Art Raffle. One a cruel monster from a blockbuster film and the other a glimpse of the beauty found in horrific moments of war.
Graeme is a Scottish artist who now works primarily in traditional mediums of watercolour and acrylic. His work has graced many different areas including books (The Dangerous Book of Heroes), television (World’s Strongest Man), gaming (Need for Speed), magazines (Radio Times), comics (2000AD and Judge Dredd), online and apps (Doctor Who).
On offer this month – The return to Middle Earth in The Hobbit film franchise featured some amazing design not least the imposing character of ‘Azog the Defiler’. One of Graeme’s favourite scenes of the Pale Orc was in the first film where he encountered Gandalf the Grey in the ruins of Dol Guldur. You can watch him create this painting on his YouTube Channel.
“To the aircraft I aim, not the man.” a quote from Italian air ace Francesco Baracca. What graceful but terrifying art the pilots of the Great War performed when entered into a dogfight. This mixed media piece captures the mesmeric dance of two pilots flying the Biplane Sopwith Camel and the Triplane Fokker Dr.I. Painted in watercolour and acrylic on Arches Art Board at A5 (21cm x 15cm) size.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
