The second issue of Planet Jimbot’s Wolf Country series is on sale soon, written once more by Jim Alexander (Calhab Justice, Batman) and drawn by Will Pickering (GoodCopBadCop, Savant), who takes over from Luke Cooper on the book.
The vampires-versus werewolves, in a Wild West setting, story picks up from where Issue 1 left off, where we were introduced to a vampire settlement surrounded by hostile werewolf tribes. The settlement is there for religious reasons, following the teachings of a vampire god – but, we soon find out in this second issue, those reasons are now being questioned by elements within the wider Kingdom.
The werewolves, of course, don’t want vampires on their land, considering their presence on their land to be sacrilege. But this issue, the focus is on intrigue in the Kingdon’s capital city, as the vampire settlement’s leader, Halfpenny, is summoned there by its warrior leader, the High Executor, for an as yet-unrevealed mission.
As ever, Jim Alexander is carefully building this world, putting characters in place, and we know that soon enough some of them will fall – victims of tooth and claw. Just how that will happen is, of course yet to come, but there’s more than enough brooding menace in this latest issue, complemented by Will Pickering’s fine art, to entertain readers.
“I have to say I was a little nervous about this [one], Jim admits on the Planet Jimbot Facebook page. “The story is off the wall even by my standards and I wasn’t sure if people would get it.” He needn’t have worried – it’s bonkers in a good way, and I’m not alone in enjoying the story. The folk over at Dancing with Skeletons, clearly have too, and happily enthuse about the new issue, calling Wolf Country Issue 2 “a clever pick up from issue 1 with glorious art… Will Pickering’s art is beautiful, the lines are fluid and expressive. The cast are strongly presented, the tensions are captured by body language as much as the words.”
