Rebellion are definitely fanning the flames for 2000AD Prog 2371, out at the end of this month (28th February), and the Press Corps of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic have given us strict orders, perhaps from Dredd himself, that blabbing anything comes with harsh penalties… so you’ll have to settle for a trailer for this week’s ace releases.
We can tell you that this week, over at Judge Dredd Megazine, we note there’s a rather somber tinge to the latest issue, as alongside its usual mix of strips, tributes are paid to artists Ian Gibson and John M. Burns, and one of the title’s original feature writers. David Baillie provides the obituary for polymath Tony Allen, writer, comedian, mixed-ability shaman, and street clown. Often referred to as the Godfather of Alternative Comedy, Allen passed on 1st December 2023, but his life was celebrated with a “living wake” last summer.
It’s as writer of the Megazine’s long running feature, “Mega-City News” that Allen will be most fondly remembered by readers – especially those who’ve been around since the very first issue. “Typeset by the fabulously talented Shanti, the feature purported to be a genuine Mega-City One newspaper,” David notes, “blending analogues of topical real-world issues with references to ongoing Dredd stories (one column was attributed to Brian Skuter, who was the fictional newspaper writer telling the story of Young Death in those same first few issues).”
An accomplished actor, performer, playwright and script writer, Tony also wrote for Fleetway’s Crisis and Revolver titles, and was the author of Attitude – wanna make something of it? The Secret of Stand-Up Comedy. Our sympathies to friends and family.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
