• A Fundraising Art Auction for the Brighton Open Air Theatre includes some terrific artwork by the likes of Clint Langley, David Lloyd – including page from his early Doctor Who strips – and Chris Riddell. Hosted by TV Auctioneer Addison Gelpey (of Storage: Flog The Lot and Bargain Hunt fame), the auction will take place on Saturday 28th February 28th 2015 at Circus Street Market, Circus Street, Brighton, BN2 9QF.
An exhibition of the artworks on offer will open at 5.00pm, with the auction itslef starting at 8.00pm. Details and catalogue at: http://bidforboat.weebly.com

• Taling of auctions, Forbidden Planet International drew our attention to the Thought Bubble Comic Art Festival charity comic art auction, featuring works from the likes of Babs Tarr, Emily Carroll, Cliff Chiang, Boulet and more going under the hammer. The artists involved all kindly donated their sketches to Thought Bubble to auction to raise money for Barnado’s, so it’s a chance to get some top comic art and support a much-needed charity at the same time. The sale runs on eBay until Thursday 5th February 2015; full information here on the Thought Bubble site here.
• Walk the Walk is a graphic novel created to educate young people about the consequences of sectarianism has been launched by the Scottish Book Trust, written by Gowan Calder and illustrated by Jill Calder. 3000 print copies of the book, which features input from literacy learners and support workers who have often had first-hand experience of sectarianism have been distributed (and you can download an e-copy free here), as part of the Scottish Government’s £9m drive to tackle the root causes of the issue.
Marc Lambert, Director of Scottish Book Trust, said: “Recent research shows that 587 charges with a religious aggravation were reported in Scotland in 2013-14, emphasising the need for innovative solutions to tackle the blight of sectarianism.”
• The Beano‘s Dennis the Menace and The Bash Street Kids are spearheading the 2015 Active Kids Campaign from Sainsbury’s designed to encourage children to ditch junk food for healthy treats and take regular exercise. Sainsbury’s hopes to promote healthy cooking and fun ways to keep fit, representing a culture change for the children of Bash Street.
• Tickets for Preston Comic Con (Saturday 1st August 2015, Preston Guild Hall ) will be going on sale from the 1st February. The organisers will post how to order on the event’s Facebook page soon – and we will soon be able to offer a buying point within Preston itself. Tickets cost £12 (Early Birds, limited numbers available), £8 Adults, £4 children (children under four free). Guests announced so far include Doctor Who actress Sarah Louise Maddison and artists Cosmic Ginge and Dave Taylor.
• Jeremy Banx, creator of strips such as “Burp”, “Mr. Bignose” and “Hector Vector and his Talking T-Shirt” for Oink! and cartoonist for the Financial Times and other publications has unleashed Frankenthing on an unsuspecting world – a new comedy horror e-book available for the Kindle (and the Kindle app) for just £1.99. “It’s a great read and Banx’s artistic skills are better than ever,” enthuses Lew Stringer. “A must for fans of his work and for anyone interested in a good fun story with an edge to the humour”. • Birmingham Comic Festival (18th April 2015, Edgbaston Cricket Ground) has also been busy announcing more guests. It’s a terrific line up that includes Britissh guests such as Commando cover artist (and much more besides) Ian Kennedy and Commando, Charlotte Corday and Dan Dare artist Keith Page who rarely attend comic events, so well worth considering. The line up includes writer and publisher Jim Alexander; Fables artist Mark Buckingham; writer Michael Carroll; cartoonist Hunt Emerson; Captain America writer Jonathan Maberry; artist, editor and writer Laura Howell; artist Lucio Parillo; writer, artist and British comics expert Lew Stringer; and many more.

He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
