If you’re looking for something for Christmas for the art lover in your life, then can we recommend a subscription to illustrators magazine from the Book Palace? The latest issue (Issue 28), features a stunning cover by Frank Kelly Freas, originally used as the cover for the September 1954 issue of Astounding Science Fiction to illustrate Fredric Brown‘s humorous SF story, Martians Go Home, which was released as a novel in 1955. There’s much more to enjoy inside, too.
More like a book than a magazine, illustrators is the art quarterly devoted to the finest illustration art ever published. It guides you through the stories behind the artists and their art, with features written by some of the leading authorities on this important art form.
As well as building into an indispensable reference library, illustrators gives readers an insight into the creative process, from idea to sketch to painting, and from painting to the image seen by millions.
Truly fabulous artwork abounds in every issue, much of the art taken from scans of the original work.
Artists featured in the current issue, edited by Diego Cordoba, are Frank Kelly Freas, the ‘Dean’ of Science Fiction artists whose career spans more than 50 years; Yvonne Gilbert, the British artist who created “one of the most famous record sleeves of all time”, Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Relax”, released in 1983; Laurent Durieux, the Brussels illustrator and alternative movie poster artist (and film director); and Heinrich Kley, the accomplished pre-War German painter and illustrator.
Also included is a look at Frank Bellamy‘s art for TV’s The Avengers, for the episode “The Winged Avenger”
