British Comic Awards 2014 Nominations Open

After a slight delay the nomination process for this year’s British Comic Awards is now open.

Readers, retailers, creators, publishers, heroes, villains and talking animals are all welcome to suggest their favourite comics and comic book creators. They will all be considered equally by the Committee for inclusion on this year’s shortlist.

You can put forward your suggestions using this simple form here on the BCA web site.

What has been your favourite comic book or graphic novel since September last year (or August for Children’s comics)? What new creators work can’t you wait for? Which comic legend would you like to see in our Hall of Fame? Please let the BCA team know. The more people they hear from, the better idea they will have of the wide world of brilliant British comics.

The categories are: Best Comic, Best Book, Emerging Talent, Hall of Fame and Young People’s Comic Awards (the latter run in association with Leeds Library).

The Committee and Judging Panel for this year’s Awards will be open to applications very soon and confirmed in the coming months.

Nominees for the British Comic Awards must be the work of a British based creative team (i.e from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and the rights to such work should belong to either the creators or a UK publisher. Work by non-UK citizens is eligible if they have resided in the UK for over three years outside of education.

If you aren’t entirely sure if something qualifies, please, suggest it anyway and the Committee will debate it.

The Awards year runs from 1st September 2013 to 31st August 2014. However, the Young People’s Comic Award has a slightly different time frame due to term times, which is 1st August 2013 to 31st July 2014.

The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil, by Stephen Collins
Creator based in the UK, published by Jonathan Cape (UK). The creator holds the rights to the work.

Phonogram, by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie
Both creators based in the UK, published by Image Comics (US). The creators hold the rights to the work.

WOULD NOT QUALIFY:

Hector Umbra, by Uli Oesterle
Creator based in Germany, published by Blank Slate Books (UK). The creator holds the rights to the work.

Young Avengers, by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie
Both creators based in the UK, published by Marvel Comics (US). Marvel Comics own the rights to the work.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more.
