Congratulations to Bryan Talbot, who won the Francisco Solano Lopez Award for Best Writer / Artist at the Etna Comics Festival last weekend in Italy.
Named after the late Argentinian comics creator who drew a number of British comics during his long and acclaimed career, this is the first year that these awards have been given.
As regular readers know, Bryan Talbot, who has been on a 'mini tour' of Italy to promote his work, has been a major force in British comics since the late 1960s, establishing himself as a master of genre. His credits include Brainstorm Comix, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Sandman, Legends of the Dark Knight, The Tale of One Bad Rat, and, more recently, the terrific Grandville saga.
Bryan attended the Festival with his wife Mary, with whom he recently won the prestigious literary prize Costa Book Award with the graphic novel Dotter of Her Father's Eyes, still unpublished in Italy.
The Etna Festival – now in its third year – was attended by more than 40,000 – yes, 40,000! – comic fans.
Bryan and Mary are patrons of the upcoming Lakes International Comic Art Festival in October.
Other winners included manga artist Keiko Ichiguchi and an award for Grant Morrison and Frank Quiteley's Dark Knight.
