In Review: A 14-year-old’s Take on Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse

Complementing Tim Robins review of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, here’s a view of the film from one of the Spidey’s younger fans, Oliver J. Soto, who longtime downthetubes readers may recall also reviewed Into the Spider-Verse, five years ago…

Oliver is 14 now, or will be two weeks… and he’s waited a loooong time for the sequel…

I couldn’t wait to see the new Spider-Man movie, so I went on opening night. I think this is the kind of movie that you just let flow over you. The effects of the movie were bold and bright with lots of contrast.

Miles thinks he’s the only one out there to save his city. Little does he know there is a whole society of Spidey-people in the multiverse – even a T-Rex and Punk Rock Spider-Man. (I cracked up seeing Lego Spider-Man).

Miles is not welcome in that club. We find out that he was never supposed to be bitten and become Spider-Man. But he was.

There is a lot of jumping around the multiverse in the movie. I think Miles is gaining some special energy powers.

I had a good laugh at the cameo of Mrs Chen in her shop, from the Venom franchise.

I didn’t think that the movie would end with such a cliff hanger. Will Miles dad die? What about Gwen’s dad, what about Miles own destiny, and will he ever be able to join the others? And The Spot!

I hope we don’t have to wait another five years to find out…
