In Review: Journey Planet 39 – Judge Dredd

Journey Planet 39 - Judge Dredd - Cover

Journey Planet is a occasional fanzine themed around – well, whatever takes the contributors’ fancy, basically, but Issue 39, just released, has a Judge Dredd theme, dedicated overall to co-creator Carlos Ezquerra.

The editor for this free, 96 page monster of an e-zine is none other than 2000AD writer Michael Carroll and features contributions from the likes of James Bacon, Peter Duncan, Dave Evans and Richmond Clements.

Dave Evans and Richmond discuss Futurequake Press, publishers of the brilliant Futurequake and Zarjaz; and there’s a terrific strip, “The Taking of Mopad 456”, written by Lee Robson and drawn by Kev Levell; and and in-depth look and examination of the Judge Dredd Megazine strip “The Third Person” by Michael Carroll, drawn by Carl Critchlow.

Michael delves into the evolution of Dredd Himself, discussing his early look designed by Carlos Ezquerra (who also provides the title’s cover), and takes us through the artists who shaped the lawman’s first decade.

John Wagner reveals his amazing and worrying powers of prediction for the future of our planet, Peter Duncan unveils the back-story behind the creation of the newest Judge Dredd fanzine Sector 13; and Pat Mills chats with James Bacon about the origins of Judge Dredd and reveals the essence of 2000AD itself in just one sentence… “2000AD was always meant to be daring, shocking, outrageous. Not daring-lite, shocking-lite, outrageous-lite. It’s either real or it ain’t.”

Alongside other features, there’s also some lovely illustration work by the likes of the late Steve Dillon, Peter Doherty, Glenn Fabry, Cam Kennedy and others.

Well worth a download!
