Meet The77 Creators: Co-Founder Steve Bull

The77 - Steve Bull

As we head toward the launch of the first issue of The77 anthology comic this week, here’s another in a series of “Meet the Creator” interviews conducted by Morgan Spiceman with the writers and artists involved in the project.

This time out, it’s a quick chat with Steve Bull, co-founder of The77 comic and The77 publications – and co-creator of “V”, with Ade Hughes, which will debut in Issue 1 of The77.

What is The77?

Steve Bull: The greatest retro comic anthology you will ever read

How did you get involved?

Steve: Ben K Sy had this crazy idea! You don’t say no to a man on a mission.

What is your story “V” about?

Steve: In the future, they fight to become history…

Who are the characters?

Steve: If you haven’t met Ba’al, yet you really need to. Oh and Haden… he’s mean though.

Where did you get the idea for the story?

Steve: I was probably in the shower (laughs). OK… Syrian mythology, mixed with everything I consumed in the 1970s and 80s.

What are your hopes for The77?

Steve: 520 issues of golden comics!

How long have you been writing?

Steve: Since before I could type….

Who is your favourite writer?

Steve: Uncle Pat, for sure. Yep – that man Mills wrote some serious edutainment

What is your favourite comic?

Steve: The77, of course – and in second place it would be 2000AD.

What are your influences?

Steve: Everything I think is cool.

What characters would you love to write?

Steve: I wouldn’t want to write anyone else’s characters. I have lots of my own still to write though!

Who would you like to work with?

Steve: Already ticked that box with Ade Hughes. There’s a couple of other breakout 77ers that I’ll be trying to get to draw my stuff.

But if you want more recognisable names I’m going for Leonardo Manco, because that guy is smashing it on Slainé – and he’s a top geezer. I’d have shouted out Nick Percival here as well, but he’s already drawn my character for The77 variant cover!

What advice would you have for upcoming writers?

Steve: A good panel is like life…. Actions speak louder than words!
