Tomorrow night (Tuesday 4th February 2020) the Oxford Comics Network join forces with the the city’s Maison Française – a French research centre in the humanities and social sciences – to welcome Ann Miller, joint editor of European Comic Art, the first English-language scholarly publication devoted to the study of European-language graphic novels, comic strips, comic books and caricature.
Ann was formerly Senior Lecturer in French at the University of Leicester, and is now a University Fellow. In addition to being joint editor of European Comic Art, she’s also published widely on comics. Recent publications have included essays on Dominique Goblet and Pauline Martin, Joe Sacco and Lewis Trondheim. She has also translated the work of many French-language comics theorists, including, most recently, Thierry Groensteen’s The Expanding Art of Comics: Ten Modern Masterpieces.
In her talk “Two comics adaptations of Zazie dans le métro: from figuration to tradaptation” she will focus on how two different adaptations of Raymond Queneau‘s famous 1959 novel was adapted into comics (Jacques Carelman’s version, from 1966, and Clément Oubrerie’s, from 2008), covering their formal choices as well as their relationship to intertexts and to discourses around sexuality and gender.
(Zazie dans le métro, Raymond Queneau’s first early success, was first adapted by Louis Malle into a film of the same name, starring Catherine Demongeot as Zazie and Philippe Noiret as Gabriel. As weell as for comics, the book has also been adapted for the stage).

He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
