The Toonseum, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, is currently in the process of putting together this summer’s exhibit, Captain America: 75 Years of the Sentinel of Liberty.
ComicArtFans reports that following the success of last year’s Avengers: 50 Years of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes exhibit, the Toonseum is looking for collectors that would be kind of enough to loan some stellar examples of Cap pages to be displayed to the public. They are looking to augment the pieces that have already been secured spanning Cap’s entire timeline including not only pages from Cap’s own books but from team books like the Invaders and Avengers as well. The exhibit will run from 6th May until 28th August 2016.
Located in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, the independent, volunteer-run non-profit ToonSeum is a small boutique style museum dedicated to the comic and cartoon arts. While the museum itself is quite small there are on average over 100 pieces of art exhibited at any given time.
Exhibits rotate every few months – at the moment, these include Alt-Weekly Comics, a historical retrospective dedicated to the comics of the alternative weekly newspaper world, which will run until 10th April 2016 and an exhibition of the work of rapper, social activist, father and educator Keith Knight. It also runs a limited number of activities for children (but is keen to stress it is not a children’s museum, but could be a great introduction to an art museum setting by introducing them to the arts through characters children know and love.
• If you think that you would like to loan some art but have questions about the process, you can e-mail Board Vice President, Harold Behar (hbeharATbehar-fingal.com) or Exhibit co-curator and CAF member Stuart Neft (NeftistATaol.com). They would be happy to answer any questions you might have about transport, insurance, museum security and can provide references from collectors who have loaned the Toonseum art for previous exhibits
• The ToonSeum is located in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District at 945 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 USA. Open Thursday through Sunday, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm, closed Monday through Wednesday. Web: www.toonseum.org
