It’s truly going to be the summer of love as 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine and Monster Fun publisher Rebellion ramps up its first Kickstarter for a brand new romance comic, Roxy – a title the company owns from its purchase of the Fleetway back catalogue.
Originally planned to launch on Monday 3rd June with a host of exclusive rewards, merchandise, and surprises for backers, the all-new Roxy sounds far removed from the original title, published between 1958 and 1963, when it merged with Valentine after 288 issues – and guaranteed, say Rebellion, “to leave you gasping for air!”
Available in digital, paperback or hardback editions, with covers from superstar artists Tula Lotay, Hannah Templer and Marguerite Sauvage, Roxy will feature four unexpected and dynamic stories of fun, flirty love and lust from some of the best storytellers in comics today, including Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson, delivering a brand new supermodel heist thriller, (Dracula, Motherf**ker); a spirited walk in the undead woods from artist writer Sarah Gordon (Vicious Creatures); a trip back in time to the regency era from GLAAD & Eisner-nominated writer Magdalene Visaggio and artist Sterric (De Vloek van Rood); and a futuristic romance between man and mech, courtesy of writer Nadia Shammas (Squire, Ms. Marvel) and artist Jaws Stone (Dames Zine: Magical Knights).

Shipping for fans old and new worldwide, whatever your level of spice, Roxy has something for you as it revives the spirit of classic British romance comics for the 21st century.

Originally launched in 1958, the original Roxy ran for 288 weekly issues, complementing sister title Marilyn, which had proven and incredible success for Amalgamated Press (later, Fleetway/IPC). Now, the title returns for an all-new anthology featuring four modern romance stories bound to inspire a whole new generation.

Rebellion had the capital to buy IPC’s back catalogue so I don’t understand why they want people to fund a rebooted comic. I assume this is not a profit participation deal so there’s no financial incentive to fund this project. Also, we’re currently living through a high cost of living period so comic book fans need to be mindful of how they spend their money.
What’s the difference between IDW and Dynamite, for example, running crowdfunding campaigns, and Rebellion doing the same? And that’s just comic companies – there are a lot of big companies using the crowdfunding model to test the water with a new project, just as Part Work publishers road test a part work with a limited “soft launch” of a new title to see if there’s a market. No-one’s being forced into backing them.
