One of the new publications on show from the University of Dundee’s UniVerse imprint at Thought Bubble this coming weekend, 5/6 November 2016, is Alpha which is written by Chris Murray, designed by Phillip Vaughan, and illustrated by various Dundee comics students past and present. This new book is based on the fictional account of the British Superhero and also features a factual history of the genre through the decades.
The book includes a bonus pin-up of Alpha and Tornado comic’s own superhero editor The Big E drawn by The Big E’s close personal friend, retiring British Comics Laureate and University Of Dundee honorary graduate, Dave Gibbons.
The UniVerse imprint showcases the diverse work from comics students on the various courses at the University of Dundee and their main publication is the annual Anthology. The current issue is Anthology Six featuring strips from the university’s Level 3 Comics Module students and described by “Charley’s War” creator Pat Mills as “An excellent collection of first class comics.”
The University of Dundee now offers a MLitt or an MDes in Comics and Graphic Novels as well as various modules at undergraduate levels. The MLitt is run by Professor Chris Murray and the MDes is run by Phillip Vaughan and there is more information about the courses on the university’s website.
