It’s that time of year when Annuals are really getting deep discounted, so let’s take a look at what’s out there to snap up as a last minute Christmas stocking filler. Many shops, including WH Smith, are offering multi buy discounts, so it’s worth shopping around if you feel up to it.
While many Annuals are more feature and text based today, it’s surprising how many there are, especially when it’s being claimed elsewhere that the format “died out”, ignoring the perennial success of both BEANO and The Dandy annuals as top sellers in bookshops and online stores.
Much of the success of surviving and ongoing titles depends on careful advance planning. These titles start to be “sold in” to the book trade at least six months ahead of publication. Since many annuals are published from August onwards, as they always were, this means comic creators have already delivered their work for the BEANO annual 2023, for example!

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
