Hallowe’ens are going to be just that little bit different from now on… Birmingham based comic book publisher Time Bomb Comics has announced the release of what will be an annually released horror anthology going under the title of Bomb Scares.
The first volume is available now and weighs in at a hefty 96 pages behind an exclusive full cover by Richard Elson (The Mighty Thor) and Dave Kendall (2000AD). It is already receiving much favourable and critical attention so should come as little surprise that it is also available as a limited edition print. The contents inside are no less impressive for within its pages you will find the comic strip art of Mike Perkins (Stephen King’s The Stand), Lucca Pizzari (The Black Knight), Roland Bird (Legion of Super-Heroes), Gary T Becks (Heavy Metal Magazine), Lew Stringer (The Beano) and many more on stories written by the likes of novelists Jasper Bark and Rob Sanders, and Metal Hurlant TV series writer Jim Alexander.
There may be names unfamiliar to some readers, but they’re ones they’ll come to know for Bomb Scares is a first class production from start to finish. “We aimed high and recruited respected editor Paul H Birch to put together a truly breathtaking array of talent,” said Time Bomb publisher Steve Tanner. “The artwork throughout is breathtaking – each of the artists involved producing some incredible pages of comic art to realise the dark and macabre tales of the writers they collaborated with.”
Time Bomb used crowd funding to launch Bomb Scares, but like the book itself, in a totally unique way. The book was going to be published regardless, and the publisher used Kickstarter’s funding system as an experiment to seek the viability of alternative distribution routes. It worked!
Within 37 hours Bomb Scares had reached its original financial target, and with little promotion through its brief 20 day funding period nearly tripled that amount. The book then made its official convention debut at the recent London MCM Comic-Con with healthy sales ensured and admirable comments made aplenty.
Within its pages traditional horror themes and eclectic scenarios sit side by side, some light-hearted moments alongside the grim, each and every one of them crafted with care and more often than not -the intent to scare!
