Here’s this week’s list of comics – both US and UK releases – on sale in specialist UK comic shops tomorrow, Wednesday 24th December 2014. We’ve picked out the titles published by British publishers in bold below, or titles with a British connection we’re aware of, including cover artists.
Mark Braithwaite, co-owner of Lancaster’s First Age Comics, who helps us create this list every week, reminded me yesterday that there will be some comic releases on 31st December, including the first issue of IDW’s Star Trek/Planet of the Apes five-issue crossover and Marvel’s Miracleman Annual #1 and S.H.I.E.L.D. #1. We’ll endeavour to bring you more details despite being stuffed with goose and Christmas cake nearer the time…
This week, we’ve started to break this regular feature down by comic company, listing British publishers first, prompted in part by the inclusion of a number of new Cinebook releases in the information received.
Although Cinebooks – their titles re-publishing many great French series in English – are already sold in several British comic shops, this is the first time we’ve had specific release dates for some of their new books. It’s great to see these titles included in information dispatched to comic shops across the US as well as the UK. Let’s hope it sees an increase in orders for their titles.
This week also sees the release of Diamond Previews #316 (January 2015), a great source for all of the comics and merchandise to be available from your local comic book shop, revealed up to two months in advance! This issue features items scheduled to ship in March 2015 and beyond.

Corto Maltese Under The Sign Of Capricorn GN
Writer/ Artist/ Comic Artist: Hugo Pratt
Yes, yes – we know this title has no British connection, either. But this book, the first of 12 volumes, launches the definitive English language edition of Hugo Pratt’s masterpiece, much admired by many comic creators, presented in the original oversized black and white format with new translations made from Pratt’s original Italian scripts.
Long before the term “graphic novel” entered the popular lexicon – ten years before Will Eisner’s A Contract with God – Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form “drawn literature” story. Corto Maltese set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe and by the mid-1970s was the continent’s most popular series and Hugo Pratt the world’s leading graphic novelist.
Hugo Pratt’s peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of 29 stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first 30 years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt’s native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests, and the waves of the Pacific.
Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn collects the first six inter-connected short stories Pratt created in France in the early 1970s: “The Secret of Tristan Bantam,” “Rendez-vous in Bahia,” “Sureshot Samba,” “The Brazilian Eagle,” “So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune,” and “The Seagull’s Fault.”

In the spirit of the avant-garde cartoonists and humorists who fathered these miscreants, a new generation of alternative-comics creators has lent their unique talents to bring the Garbage Pail Kids into the wacky world of comics- just in time for their 30th birthday!
