Comics Dundee: Oor Wullie’s Bucket Trail

Oor Wullie Bucket Trail Leaflet
The city of Dundee is currently in the middle of the art and charity installation Oor Wullies’ Bucket Trail in which painted fibreglass statues of the Sunday Post newspaper’s 80 year old naughty boy character are scattered around the city for locals and tourists alike to visit and ‘collect’. The majority of the main batch of 55 statues are in Dundee with a few further flung to Broughty Ferry and Carnoustie whilst a select batch are ‘on tour’ around other Scottish towns and cities. The trail has been created by Wild In Art along with Oor Wullie publisher DC Thomson and local sick kids charity The Archie Foundation and runs until 27 August 2016 after which the statues will be auctioned off to raise money for the Tayside Children’s Hospital.

For comics fans some are of more interest than others with ‘Oor Original’ in traditional newspaper black and white by Oor Wullie artist Peter Davidson at the City Quay Diving Bell while the Overgate shopping centre has Nicki Bradwell’s ‘Wullie’s Cheeky Trails’ which has Oor Wullie comic strips covering the statue.

American comics are represented by ‘Iron Boy’, a Tony Stark/Iron Man representation by artist Sophie Green which is at the Swannie Ponds in Stobsmuir while the Tower Building of the University of Dundee (familiar to attendees of the Dundee Comics Day) has ‘When Wullie Met Dr Manhattan’ designed by Sarah Coonan and based on Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen artwork, a statue that Dave thought well enough of to autograph on its bucket.

Perhaps however the most interesting of the comics related statues is ‘Wullie The Menace’ by Lee O’Brien who has turned Oor Wullie into Dennis The Menace and it is located, appropriately enough, in the city’s Bash Street. With Gnasher and Minnie The Minx plus Plug and Wilfred from The Bash Street Kids on his bucket, this statue along with Peter Davidson’s ‘Oor Original’ are available as small replicas via the Wild In Art Bucket Trail website.
