Behind the pseudonym, Charlie Trumper, Eddie Campbell and Phil Elliott created over 100 comic strips between 1984 and 1985 for the UK weekly music paper, Sounds. The Wonders of Science was their first, with Eddie and Phil creating their own strips every other week. Now, the pair are seeking crowdfunding for a collection on Kickstarter.
In The Wonders of Science, Phil and Eddie ruminate about the philosophical, moral and downright bonkers state of the modern world. They do not profess to having any solutions but having had a sneak peek at the collection, I’m pretty sure a lot of you enjoy reading their theories, especially if you previously backed Rodney – The Premonition, another collection of strips from Sounds.
A music paper published between 1970 and 1991, Sounds initially covered progressive rock but by the mid-1970s was championing Punk Rock and New Wave. Later, it was the first UK paper to interview Nirvana (Kurt Cobain was often seen wearing a Sounds t-shirt). By the time Eddie and Phil made their debut, it already had a good tradition of featuring comic strips in its pages, with work by Alan Moore (under the name Curt Vile), Bryan Talbot and Savage Pencil.
The Wonderswere first published in Sounds tabloid-size, This new collection will be A4 landscape which will present the strips as close to the original.
The team have now raised funds for the A4 landscape comic, which includes a new introduction by Eddie, but there’s still time to back it – and everyone who pledges will receive a digital PDF version, and they are now offering a print of the front cover, free, to everyone who pledges for a physical copy.
The Wonders of Science will only be available through this Kickstarter campaign or direct from Eddie and Phil, so if you want a copy of this bonkers piece of music industry ephemera, then head to Kickstarter now…
