The next issue of indie hit and Kickstarter-funded Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman (#8), created by Tom Ward and Luke Parker (artist on the Halloween Eagle strip for Dark Horse appearing in Astro Hustle), lettered by Micah Myers, is available to pre-order now!
For those who came in late: Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman is a Victorian adventure/ horror/ cape gaslamp comic for mature readers, set in 1880s’ London. Based on a fictional version of the life of ‘Elephantman’ Joseph Merrick, it steps between historical facts and turn of the century folklore juxtaposed with the American superhero comic conventions of super powers, masks, secret identities and fantastic adventures.
Betrayed, robbed and left for dead by his tour manager, Merrick finds his way back to London where he is rediscovered by Dr. Frederick Treves who, unknown to Merrick, is the man responsible for his exile to Europe. Treves takes Merrick back to the London hospital where he can recover, promising to search for a cure to Merrick’s condition but actually attempting to unlock the secret of his skin for his own gain.
In the latest issue of this brilliant series, we catch up with Merrick, who’s barely survived his battle against the maggot deity Phu-ggogot. Now the Elephantman must face not only the wrath of the Man Elephant, but also his own past…
