Just when you thought you had seen everything, this amazing Star Wars artefact arrives after being hidden away for forty years – and goes up for auction through Heritage Auctions later this month, along with rare Casablanca, a rare Spanish Doctor Who and the Daleks film poster, Dracula, King Kong and many other amazing film posters.
In 1977 20th Century Fox commissioned an ad agency to produce the campaign, including posters, for their forthcoming film Star Wars. The agency had used artist Tom Jung previously and asked him to come up with concepts for the campaign. He was given photos taken by unit photographers in colour and black and white as well 2.25″ still images printed on contact sheets.
Jung came up with the wonderful design for the now famous Style A one sheet as well as the designs for the insert and half sheet posters.
Going under the hammer is the original concept artwork used to pitch the half sheet design to Fox, George Lucas and company. Included is the hand drawn pencil sketch (22.5″ X 14″) by Jung as well as a stat of the Star Wars logo and credits rubber cemented in place and Form-a-Line used to create a border on a piece of illustration board (30″ X 24″).
The artwork is known to be authentic and would be a wonderful addition to a Star Wars collector’s universe.
Also included is a rolled copy of the original half sheet which was produced from the concept. It has two missing corners and wear and tear to the border.
An advertising art director, graphic designer and illustrator, Tom Jung best known for his film poster art, and a motion picture storyboard artist.
One of Jung’s early assignments was the one sheet theatrical poster for the 1959 movie Plan 9 from Outer Space but it is his 1977 Star Wars poster (and subsequent Star Wars-related poster art) for which he is best known, meaning he carries the unusual distinction of having worked on perhaps the worst and best movies made during the last fifty years.
Other credits include Dr. Zhivago, Far from the Madding Crowd, Ice Station Zebra, The Man with the Golden Gun, the 19778 animated film The Lord of the Rings, The Shoes of the Fisherman and many, many more.
Heritage Auctions poster auction includes some stunning artworks from a host of films – not just SF, such as a vibrant Spanish Doctor Who and the Daleks film poster with art by Macario “Mac” Gomez, but comedy films, westerns and much more. Well worth checking out.
