Titan Comics has released the covers for its upcoming Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Two #11, on sale Wednesday 8th June 2016 – and one variant cover is an affectionate tribute to The Beatles.
The variant cover is the work of artist Simon Myers, whose fondness for the aesthetic of the late 1960s and early 1970s has proved constant inspiration and influence on his work. His impressive client list includes Dark Horse Comics, Fluid Games, Harley Davidson, Duffer, Vintage Vantage and Virgin Trains.
Two other covers for the issue, written by Nick Abadzis, drawn by Elena Casagrande and Arianna Florean are available for the issue – one by Claudia Ianniciello and the other a photo cover.
Myers art homages the cover The Beatles 1967-1970 album, a collection of later songs from the Fab Four, a photo by Angus McBean which was itself a tribute to his cover for the group’s 1963 debut LP Please Please Me.
McBean took the distinctive colour photograph of the group looking down over the stairwell inside the now-demolished EMI House in Manchester Square, London, then recreated it in 1969. Originally intended for the then-planned Get Back album, it was not used when that project saw eventual release in 1970 as Let It Be. Instead, another photograph from the 1969 shoot, along with an unused photograph from the 1963 photo shoot, was used for both this LP and The Beatles 1962–1966, also known as the Red and Blue albums, first released in 1973.
While there have been numerous references to The Beatles in various Doctor Who stories down the years in print, on screen, The Beatles first brush with the Doctor occurred when they were seen on the Time-Space Visualiser in the Dalek story The Chase.
