Free Comic Book Day is back on Saturday 7th May, and the cover for Titan Comics Doctor Who title has been revealed, featuring The Fugitive Doctor, played on screen by Jo Martin – appearing in comics for the first time.
Available to pre-order now from participating comic shops, we’re told the comic, written by Jody Houser, with art by Roberta Ingranata, will offer “an epic adventure with the traveling Time Lord”, the issue serving as a lead-in to the explosive new story arc starting in May, that will reveal the very early years of the Doctor.
“Past, present, and future all collide in a Doctor Who tale that’s out of this universe,” we’re told.
The Fugitive Doctor first appeared in the TV series in “Fugitive of the Judoon”, where she’d taken on the guise of a human tour guide, Ruth Clayton, by means of a Chameleon Arch. In “Once, Upon Time”, which aired last year, we discovered she was indeed a past incarnation of the Doctor, from a period erased from the memory of the First Doctor onwards. She had worked for the Time Lord black ops group, Division, until, no longer willing to play her part in the Division’s designs, the Doctor slipped away from Gat, her superior officer, and hid on Earth, her memories erased.
On Twitter, writer Jody Houser, whose latest Doctor Who story is another crossover, Empire of the Wolf, featuring numerous Doctors, is out now, with #3 just released, teased that there’s “some fun stuff coming this Spring for Doctor Who fans”. It sounds from the description, and based on recent Who releases from Titan, that more crossovers are in the works.
The Fugitive Doctor, played by Jo Martin, the first black actress to land lead role on Doctor Who, already has an official figure, released as Doctor Who Figurine Collection #188 by Eaglemoss last year.
While Jo herself, currently featuring in another BBC series, the medical drama, Holby City, hasn’t commented on the news, she has retweeted other reports of her debut in comics, so we’re guessing she’s pleased about it.
Free Comic Book Day, an industry-led annual promotion to encourage you to visit your local comic shop. Not only to pick up free comics, but to hopefully buy some from that shop too – and generally have fun with fellow comic fans.
Many comic shops will be having special events today, with comic creators doing signings – or they might simply be having a bit of fun with some cosplay and refreshments alongside the comics on offer.
To find out where your local comic shop is in the UK, check out our British and Irish Comic Shop Map – or the FCBD Comic Shop Locator page if you’re reading this beyond our shores.
