British Comic Shop Releases (3rd June 2015) – Custard Creams and Gunsuits!

Famous Monsters Presents Gunsuits #1

Here’s our guide to new comics and graphic on sale in British comic shops today (Wednesday 3rd June 2015), complementing our monthly list of new British graphic novels and comic collections (June 2015 list here).

This week sees the release of Arcadia #2 by British writer Alex Paknadel, drawn by Eric Scott Pfeiffer, which saw its first issue go to a second printing (read our preview of #2 here). Also worth looking out for are two indie titles – Verity Fair Book One: Custard Creams & Pink Elephants by Terry Wiley, published by Britain’s Borderline Press (we have some pages here) and the impressive-looking Drawn and Quarterly 25 Years Of Contemporary Cartoon Comic & Graphic Novel, celebrating the American independent publisher’s quarter-century with new and rare archival comics and essays, including work by Kate Beaton, Tom Gauld and Rutu Modan, alongside rare and never-before-seen work from the likes of Shigeru Mizuki, Guy Delisle, Chris Ware and Art Spiegelman, all wrapped in a cover by Tom Gauld.

Elsewhere, the hugely talented PJ Holden (Judge Dredd, Numbercruncher, Dept. of Monsterology) is back in the limelight, with art on Famous Monsters Presents Gunsuits #1 (cover above) written by Paul Tobin. Armoured warriors and monsters with lots of tentacles – what more do you need to search this out? And also look out for Uncanny Season 2 #3 from Andy Diggle, wrapped in a simply stunning cover by Jock!

Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

JUDGE DREDD // BREAKING BUD By John Wagner and Richard Elson (Art)

Mega-City One, 2137 AD. Home to 50 million citizens, this urban hell is situated along the east coast of post-apocalyptic North America, where crime is rampant. Tensions run a constant knife-edge and only the zero-tolerance Judges — empowered to dispense instant justice — can stop total anarchy. Toughest of them all is JUDGE DREDD — he is the Law! Now, time cops from the future are retrieving a highly powerful bracelet…

SLÁINE // PRIMORDIAL By Pat Mills and Simon Davis (Art)

Albion, in a time of legend. Celtic warrior SLÁINE united the tribes of the Earth Goddess Danu and became the first High King of Ireland. After ruling for seven years, he travelled through time to fight for the Goddess in other eras before returning to save his people from the Fomorian sea devils. Now, having journeyed to the Isle of Monadh to rescue Sinead from the Drune Lords, he’s being hunted by Trojan soldiers… P

FUTURE SHOCKS // THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BOB By INJ Culbard

Out in the vast reaches of the universe, there are an infinite number of stories waiting to be told. From chronicles of the lowliest swamp denizens in backwater galaxies to the rise and fall of rulers of entire star systems, anything is possible in these twisted tales. Abandon your preconceptions, expect the unexpected, and take a trip beyond the edges of the imagination…

THARG’S 3RILLERS // COMMERCIAL BREAK by Eddie Robson & Mike Collins

Three episodes, one complete, self-contained story — a condensed hit of super-charged Thrill-power beamed to you directly from the Nerve Centre! The Lake District, 1997. Daisy, Annie and Leo are three friends hanging out in the town of Osterpool, where nothing very much happens. But a dying alien has passed them the power of Brixels, organic material that can create anything — and its enemies want to get hold of it…

STRONTIUM DOG // THE STIX FIX by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra

Late 22nd century. After the Atomic Wars, many survivors were warped by the Strontium 90 fallout. These ‘mutants’ became a victimised underclass, forced into ghettos, and the only career open to them was bounty hunting. One such Search/Destroy agent, or STRONTIUM DOG, is Johnny Alpha, who was thought killed. Now, he’s found the kidnapped NKD leader Jim Jing Jong, and has anticipated a double-cross…

By Terry Wiley

Who is Verity Bourneville? She’s a mess, a loudmouth, a waver of hands and a pain in the neck. She’s a bit-part actress and occasional drunken buffoon. The Spectators - Cover

The Spectators Graphic Novel
Writer, Artist and Cover Artist: Victor Hussenot

The Spectators unfolds as a poetic and philosophical introspection on the nature of man. Reminiscent of French New Wave cinema with its clipped dialogue, gentle pacing, and departure from a classic narrative structure, Spectators is an exciting new graphic novel by a unique illustrator.

It’s after one such night of debauchery with artist GREG HINKLE that the project really comes into its own. Quite literally. Because Airboy himself appears to set the two depraved comic book creators on the straight and narrow.

But is the task too much for our hero?
