Edinburgh based artist/writer Aimee Lockwood will be debuting her work at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF) this coming weekend. She works mostly in pen and ink, and in full colour where possible, and is inspired by the rugged north coast of Scotland where she grew up.
Aimee started making comics in 2014 and since then has self-published a number of short mini comics online and in print. Her one page comic, Trapper (above), was awarded third place in the Over 18s section of the 2014 Thought Bubble Comic Art Competition and is due to be published in the 2015 Thought Bubble Anthology, and she has recently been working on a longer story set in the same world.
This year Aimee has stepped up to take her first sales table at a major comics event. “This is going to be my first year exhibiting,” Aimee told downthetubes, “so I asked a few people for advice on where to start and LICAF came up a lot as a con that people had found friendly and enjoyable. I’m really excited to have a table there.” She will be in the first floor sales hall of the Lakes’ Comics Clock Tower where she will have two brand new titles for sale. Food Chain is a colour anthology of her work which includes the title story about salmon, while North Coast Plagues is a short black and white comic based on a recent trip to Caithness in the far north of Scotland to visit her family.
Aimee is an active member of the Edinburgh League of Comics (ELC), a group aimed at developing the local community of comic writers and artists, which meets on a regular basis in and around Edinburgh. With them she has run various workshops and social events including a workshop for the BBC.
“I don’t think I’d have made any comic art at all if not for the Edinburgh League of Comics, let alone developed it,” Aimee told us. “Meeting up regularly with other people in the comics community here gives me an incentive to challenge myself and keep producing new work – so I’ll have something to show them every month! I’m still pretty new to comics and I feel like I have a lot to learn, so having some good friends around who can help me do that has been really amazing. I’d definitely encourage people to join similar groups where they live if they can.”
As well as her strip work, Aimee has also produced a variety of individual illustrations, many of which show a Heath Robinson-like complexity of design, which includes this one of a snow-yacht entitled ‘Run Away To Sea’ which Aimee plans to include in a future story.
