Liam Sharp cuts loose in the upcoming Starhenge, Book One: The Dragon & the Boar, a six issue fantasy/sci-fi series launching from Image Comics in July. The publisher describes it as “visually stunning”.
I describe that as nothing short of an understatement, after getting a sneak peek at the double-length first issue.
In Starhenge, a future Merlin travels to 5th-century Britain to prevent monstrous time-traveling killer robots from robbing the universe of magic- and Amber Weaver’s lively present-day narrative reveals how she becomes drawn into a war across time.
Not only does the book look, utterly incredible; the scope of the story, steeped in Arthurian legend, spanning past, present and future, mashing magic with SF, is pretty breathtaking.
“I’ve wanted to do my own Image comic for 30 years. I’ve wanted to do a Merlin comic for even longer than that!” Liam says. “This is a culmination of so many dreams and ambitions of mine finally being realised, and that makes it the most exciting and personal comic project I have ever done. I can’t wait to see it on the shelves!”
Well, after reading #1, neither can I – although hand held up, as Liam’s first regular editor, back in my Marvel UK days, when he cooked up a storm with Dan Abnett on Death’s Head II, you’ll forgive me for being a just a little biased…
Image describes Starhenge as “The Terminator meets The Green Knight“, a “sprawling 30-page first chapter inspired by the Arthurian legend and infused with sci-fi action”.
And that’s just #1… what’s the rest of this series going to be like? Please do give it a look!
