Here’s this week’s run down of new comics on sale in comic shops across the UK, with the emphasis, as ever, on titles that are the work of British creators and published by British publishers.
If you missed the monthly edition, then be sure to pick up the Wild’s End collection by Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard, out this week from Boom! Studios. This smashing anthropomorphic take on classic science-fiction mythos is great fun, set in Lower Crowchurch, a small English community enjoying the peace of the 1930s. When the town becomes the victim of an alien invasion, the residents’ lives are upended by the harsh realities of life-and-death violence. Led by the town’s outsider and retired war veteran, they have to rally together to uncover the secret of their invaders and hope to fight back. This is a terrific series, give it a try.
As we reported earlier, this week also sees the release of a new Judge Dredd Megazine, celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, marked with a special cover from artist Barry Kitson. It’s a great issue all round, with a nice nod to the first issue of the Meg in the “Judge Dredd” strip and a wonderful “Demon Nic” story from Paul Grist. As well as writing this issue’s text story, Karl Stock also provides a great feature on DC’s new Vertigo titles – and Matt Badham goes over the top to interview “Bad Company” men Pete Milligan and Rufus Dayglo, whose new strip is running in 2000AD.
Also out this week, on the non-Brit created releases side, is the first issue of The Rook from Dark Horse by Steven Grant with art by Paul Gulacy. Bill DuBay’s time-traveling adventure classic returns and I can safely confirm Restin Dane is back and ready for action – anyplace, anytime!
And, talking of time travel, Titan Comics has shed loads of Doctor Who out this week – and who could resist that Rian Hughes cover on the latest Twelfth Doctor story? Details below! (Rian tells us he’s enjoyed doing these covers and hope he’ll get asked to do more – and so do we!)
After the great cliffhanger to the recently-released Eleventh Doctor Year 2 Issue One (no spoilers here, but if you’re longtime a Doctor Who Magazine comic strip fan then you won’t be disappointed), what more will the creative team throw fans way?
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.
• You may also be already thinking about Christmas, so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are invading bookshops at a steady pace right now.

Messenger Legend Joan Of Arc Graphic Novel Hard Cover
Writer: Tony Lee Artist/ Cover Artist: Sam Hart
Acclaimed graphic-novel creators Tony Lee and Sam Hart present a dynamic retelling of the heroic and tragic tale of Joan of Arc. It is 1424. France and England have been fighting for more than a hundred years, and Jehanne D’Arc experiences her first saintly vision. Even her parents think she’s delirious-until her next vision allows them to save the village. From a small town to the besieged city of Orleans and on to the cathedral of Reims, Joan follows her faith and leads the French to victory after victory. But not everyone believes in the divine voices she hears. Some call her a heretic and want her burned at the stake. From the creators of Outlaw: The Legend of Robin Hood and Excalibur: The Legend of King Arthur comes a visually striking, action-packed story of a young woman facing the men who lead her country, her enemies’ deadly arrows, and her own fears, to become a heroine whose name would be remembered for centuries to come.
