Veteran director Alejandro Jodorowsky, co-creator of the graphic novel The Incal with artist Moebius, has formally handed the reins of helming its big screen adaptation to Taika Waititi.
In a video posted by publisher Humanoids, prepared by Frank Pavich, director of Jodorowsky’s Dune, veteran director Jodorowsky, now 92, who long expressed his desire to adapt the stunning SF epic for the big screen, formally handed over the reins to the award-winning New Zealander director, whose many critically-acclaimed credits include the feature films Boy (2010) and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016).
Waititi will co-write and direct the adaptation of The Incal, the SF graphic novel from writer Alejandro Jodorowsky with art by Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius.
The Incal is also just the first work in a series of connected comics that Jodorowsky wrote (referred to as the Jodoverse), which might lead to a long-running franchise, but Jodorowsky, acknowledging that at 92, is too old to direct such an epic, is more concerned that any film is more important as an artistic creation, rather than about making money.
“The films and graphic novels of Alejandro Jodorowsky have influenced me and so many others for so long. I was stunned to be given the opportunity to bring his iconic characters to life and I am grateful to Alejandro, Fabrice and everyone at Humanoids for trusting me to do so,” Waititi commented in a statement about the project to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month.
The Incal, by Moebius and Jodorowsky centres on the tribulations of the shabby detective John Difool, as he searches for the precious and coveted Incal.
John Difool, a low-class detective in a degenerate dystopian world, finds his life turned upside down when he discovers an ancient, mystical artifact called “The Incal.” Difool’s adventures will bring him into conflict with the galaxy’s greatest warrior, the Metabaron, and will pit him against the awesome powers of the Technopope. These encounters and many more make up a tale of comic and cosmic proportions that has Difool fighting for not only his very survival, but also the survival of the entire universe.
