The Awesome Comics Podcast gang – Dan Butcher, Tony Esmond and Vince Hunt – are joined by Lucy Sullivan, creator of the powerful graphic novel Barking this week, on general release from publisher Unbound next month, with support from the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
In Barking, a powerful and haunting metaphor for mental health, and the human condition, Jeff Lemire Alix Otto is having a very bad day. Easily her worst so far. A year since they fished her friend’s body from the river, she finds herself hounded, haunted and driven to the brink. Caught in a situation she can’t explain, Alix is handed over to the professionals and sectioned, left alone in a labyrinthine system with her delusions running wild… Barking is a tale of grief, madness and the ghosts that haunt us…
Lucy Sullivan talks about the book’s journey, inspiration and creation process, as well as its representation of mental health – and the Podcast also features chat about crowdfunding, lettering techniques, proper representation, and the Rosette Challenge (for which a roster of artists and independent comics lovers interpreted of one of the few remaining photos of a notorious Utah brothel owner, Rosette Duccinni Davie); as well as plenty of chuckles and fun, as everyone picks out great independent books for everyone to check out as well.
Featured in this Podcast are Lucy Sullivan, Barking, Unbound, MQ Mental Health, MIND, the #Rosette Challenge, Cliff Cumber, Raechel Leigh Carter, Spark Issue 2, Atomic Hercules, a crowdfunder for a comic about the last reliable sword arm on a world infested with mutants and psychopathic androids from Adam Falp, Petricor, a new title from Gareth Hopkins, Slaughterhawk by David Broughton, Backtrack #1 by Brian Joines and Jake Elphick, Oni Press/Lion Forge, and Dragman (reviewed here by Tony Esmond) by Steven Appleby.
