Here’s our list of both British and US comics on sale this week in comic shops (from Wednesday 15th April 2015), complementing our monthly list of British graphic novel releases (April 2015 release list here).
There are no less than three Doctor Who titles from Titan Comics, including the new Twelfth Doctor tale from Robbie Morrison with art by Brian Williamson. It’s a great looking issue and editor Andrew James has been enthusing about Brian’s art over on the Panel to Panel podcast recently.
Just released in the US is Egmont’s Inside the World of Gerry Anderson book, published late last year, detailing many of his show’s classic creations illustrated by the hugely talented Graham Bleathman. Well worth a look if you haven’t already seen it.
Plus, check out Cold Mountain – The Legend of Han Shan and Shih Te, The Original Dharma Bums published by Shambala – a smart, funny graphic novel written by Sean Michael Wilson, exploring the life, legend, and lore of two of the greatest poets in Chinese history – Han Shan (known as “Cold Mountain”) and Shih Te – who lived during the Tang dynasty (618-906 CE).
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

Legend of the Scarlet Blades
Writer/Artist/Cover Artist: Saverio Tenuta
New edition of the masterpiece by Italian creator Saverio Tenuta. Raido, a young, amnesic Ronin (masterless Samurai) roams the land in a quest to regain his memory. His first stop is “the city that talks to the sky,” the ultimate stronghold against the ice invading the “land of the rising sun.” There, he meets Meiki, a graceful puppeteer and storyteller. But the unlikely duo soon incur the wrath of the beautiful, yet evil, Queen Ryin and her body-grafting general. Legend of the Scarlet Blades is an exquisitely painted saga, whose universe is inspired by feudal Japanese history and traditions, and full of breathtaking settings populated by a myriad of wondrous mythical beings that stay with the reader long after the last page.

Cold Mountain – The Legend of The Original Dharma Bums (Publisher: Shambala)
Writer: Sean Michael Wilson Artist/Cover Artist: Akiko Shimojima
This is a smart, funny graphic novel exploring the life, legend, and lore of two of the greatest poets in Chinese history – Han Shan (known as “Cold Mountain”) and Shih Te – who lived during the Tang dynasty (618-906 CE). They were critics of authority (both secular and religious) and champions of social justice who left their poetry on tree trunks and rocks. They were also reportedly monastics, drunks, cave dwellers, immortals, and many other wild and wondrous things. Sean Michael Wilson has brought these renegade poets to life, showing the places they went and the philosophical and meditative aspects of their lives, as well as revealing their humor and wackiness and their penetrating insights into the human condition.

Writer: Kieron Gillen Artist: Rafa Ortiz Cover Artist: Fernando Heinz
Crossed C-Day 2015 is here! And to celebrate the event, superstar writer Kieron Gillen (Uber, Wicked & Devine) is launching a new story arc that will take the horrors of the Crossed back to the ancient past! 75,000 years ago was the closest humanity has ever came to being purged from the Earth. There were as few as 2000 humans remaining. This is historical fact. Why it came to this is generally blamed on super-volcano Toba causing a minor ice-age. But that’s not the full story. That is not the history of the Homo Tortor, i.e. Man The Toturer. This empire before the beginning of time, that sends raiding parties gathering other Homo species and enormous mega-fauna, invented cruelty, refined domination, perfected killing. And they think their power will last forever. Join the hunt for historical answers with this issue that kicks off C-Day events worldwide as fans celebrate the grueling world of Crossed at comic shops everywhere. There is no help, there is no hope. There is only the Crossed. Available with Regular, Homo Tortor, Megafauna Mayhem, & Terror Birds Covers by Fernando Heinz, Torture & Ritual Covers by Raulo Caceres, Wraparound Cover by Rafa Ortiz, Art Deco Cover by Michael DiPascale, Femme Fatale cover by Juan Jose Ryp, and a special Red Crossed Incentive Cover also by Heinz.
Crossed Plus 100 #4 (Mature Readers, Variant Covers)
Writer: Alan Moore Artist/Cover Artist: Gabriel Andrade
As the layers of the mystery begin to unravel, Future Taylor goes to compare notes with an archivist from another settlement. All the evidence points to an impossible conclusion. One that seems so radical, Future has to search out the final answers on her own. Alan Moore, the man who revolutionized the comics medium, returns to monthly comics and puts his unique stamp upon the Crossed universe, as he and artist Gabriel Andrade paint a vivid picture of the future 100 years after the outbreak! This multi-layered story delivers a new brand of horror to Crossed fans at the hands of the scribe that redefined the comics medium.
This masterwork is a self-contained whole new world; no prior knowledge of the Crossed series is needed.
All the covers for the series have been planned out by Alan Moore, with the images enriching and expanding on the series. Clues and glimpses of what came before, and what might be, are found throughout the variant covers.
American History X Wraparound – Each of these will depict a specific time in the past hundred years, showing how things have changed and offering a peek at some key events. Each cover will display the year in which it takes place to help build the full picture.
Crossed Culture – These are all images of how the Crossed have changed the way they live. With few humans left to hunt, and the animal kingdom thriving with predators, even the thrill-driven Crossed have had to make adjustments to their lifestyle.
Future Tense – Each cover is a homage to a famous work of science fiction, and each of those original works ties into themes of this series.
New World Order Wraparound – These are not for the faint of heart or delicate of constitution. We can’t even picture them in this catalog, they are visions of what an ideal all-Crossed world would be. If the madmen have their dreams come true, what would the everyday life look like? These covers are brutally intense images of true horror and may have scenes of torture, depravity, and nudity. These are clearly for adults only. Each copy of this edition will ship in a sealed polybag with a protective slip cover over the actual image to assure it can be racked in stores. The graphic pictured here is the slip cover only. Due to all these special protective measures this edition is strictly limited to initial orders.
Also available with Retailer Incentive covers of Red Crossed and Design Sketch, showing the original works of series artist Gabriel Andrade. Don’t miss out on the ultra-rare CGC Numbered Edition as well!
