While anticipation for the 350th landmark issue of Judge Dredd Megazine is building among fans, there’s no shortage of action in the latest issue, 348, on sale now in all good newsagents, speciality stores and digitally.
Adrian Salmon conjures up a dark and distinctive story from the Dredd-verse in Karyn: Skinner
For me, I’m of course pleased to see the magazine’s regular comic supplement includes not only a reprinting the finale to Janus:Psi by Grant Morrison & Mark Millar, drawn by Paul Johnson, but also features one of the few stories I’ve written for the Dredd-verse, Karyn: Skinner, drawn by Adrian Salmon. Commissioned by David Bishop back in the early 1990s, the strip was originally to have been drawn by Kevin Cullen, but for whatever reason Adrian bravely stepped up to the plate and delivered some powerful visuals as I had some fun with a story that features not only a creepy villain (well, I hope he’s creepy!), able to take on the appearance of its victims, but a Block War between Nelson and Murdock, and an annoying talking chimp.
I’m told there’s more Judge Karyn to come in next issue’s supplement. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
The opening page from “The Man from the Ministry” by Gordon Rennie & Kev Hopgood
Another highlight of the 128-page issue is the first episode of The Man From the Ministry from writer Gordon Rennie and artist Kev Hopgood. In this creator-owned tale the British Government’s revolutionary space programme of the 1950s, which saw manned expeditions heading out into the cosmos, led to all manner of alien beings taking an interest in Earth.
A ministry was set up to defend the UK from invasion, but sixty years later, all that’s left is Albert Morningside and his assistant Stan… It looks like it’s going to be great fun and Kev’s art is perfect for the story.
