Commando No 4635 – Warrior’s Return
Story: Mac MacDonald Art: Carlos Pino Cover: Carlos Pino

Sitting at the controls of a Heinkel 115 floatplane with a Commissar’s pistol pressed to her neck, Lieutenant Yana Belinky has little choice but to follow his orders to return to the Soviet Union. In truth, though, she was quite pleased – for, back in the Motherland, there would be a chance to hit back at the invaders of her country.

All she had to do was stay alive long enough to get there!

Commando 4636

Commando No 4636 – Ambush!
Originally Commando No 63 (April 1963)
Story: Roger Clegg Art: Gordon Livingstone Cover: Ken Barr

It was said the men of the Airborne Division were afraid of nothing. But that wasn’t strictly true.

There was one man who could make a wary look come into their eyes, who could make their courageous hearts miss a beat – and he wore the same red beret as themselves.

Lieutenant Tom Connor was his name – a proper death or glory boy. If you followed him into action you either came back with a medal – or didn’t come back at all!

“Those of you who know military anniversaries will be aware that September was the month of the huge Allied airborne assault on the bridge at Arnhem.” notes Commando Editor Calum Laird. “With that in mind, this Para tale from the creative pen of Roger Clegg seemed appropriate. Commando has never set out to retell true military histories but the background of the men of the airborne forces and the missions they undertook lends a custom-made background for this tale.

“Taking full advantage of this heroic atmosphere are artists Gordon Livingstone and Ken Barr – whose heroic efforts make this a Commando not to be missed.”

Commando 4637

Commando No 4637 – Codename Crusher
Story: Mac MacDonald Art: Jaume Forns Cover: Janek Matysiak

By 1941, German-occupied Norway had become a safe haven for U-boats preying on the Arctic convoys taking vital war materials from Britain to the Soviet Union. One base in particular had proved impossible for the allies to neutralise by conventional means.

That was why a special sabotage team was being dropped in. with the help of the locals, and a Polish naval officer, they hoped to do what waves of RAF bombers couldn’t – smash the base with The Hammer Of Thor.

Commando 4638

Commando No 4638 – Glide Into Danger
Originally Commando No 2186 (May 1988)
Story: Allan Chalmers Art: C.T. Rigby Cover: Ian Kennedy

Ken Blight wrestled with the controls of the Horsa glider, trying to land safely while dodging the deadly streams of tracer flying all around.

Ken had always wanted to see action, to be where the danger was – in fact that was the reason he had joined the Glider Pilot Regiment. But now it looked like he was in more danger than he could handle!

“Sometimes people’s perceptions of Commando heroes can be influenced by certain things beyond our control,” says Deputy editor Scott Montgomery. “For example, although we are glad of any positive media exposure, most press coverage persists in leading with clichéd headlines like, ‘Still bashing the Boches fifty years on!’ and talking of, ‘Square-jawed’ or ‘Stiff-upper-lipped’ courageous Tommies.

“However, when you meet the main character here, glider pilot Ken Blight, we immediately see that he is brave, yes – but also very flawed and, is much more interesting and believable for it.”
