Something For the Weekend: Penny Dreadful Monsters, Oh My! (New Comics w/c 9/5/16)

2000AD Prog 1980

Alongside promoting this week’s 2000AD – and do check out Prog 1980, because there’s some great revelations, and it’s worth the cover price alone for the stunning art from Neil Googe on “Survival Geeks”, written by Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby – Rebellion have reminded me about their upcoming collection of Monster, a strip that first featured the short-lived 1980s horror comic, Scream!.

Monster - from Scream!

Monster” tells the story of Kenny Corman and his hideously deformed uncle Terry. Both outcasts in a cruel world, Uncle Terry’s nasty habit of savagely killing anybody who crossed his path, forced the heroic pair to go on the run. The strip – which survived Scream‘s merger into Eagle – followed the pair’s journey across Britain as they attempted to get Uncle Terry to a doctor in Scotland that would be able to help him with his anger management.

Initially written by Alan Moore, “Monster” was continued by  John Wagner (credited as “Rick Clark”) and Alan Grant, with art by Heinzl and Jesus Redondo. Reprinted in full for the first time, this is a classic tale and well worth taking a look at when it goes on sale, alongside Cursed Earth: Uncensored, on 14th July. What is behind the attic door?

A scene from Penny Dreadful #1

Talking of horror comics, it’s a huge week for Titan Comics as they’re naturally giving front and centre attention to Penny Dreadful #1, written by Penny Dreadful TV show writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, with art by Louie De Matinis (Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein).

This prequel comic – which includes a terrific  fast-paced chase through wolf-infested countryside and some cracking scary moments, although some will probably mean more to followers of the show than casual readers – reveals the terrifying events that led Vanessa (played on screen by Eve Green) to try and find her missing childhood friend, Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn), and exposes the true nature of the vampiric monsters infesting Victorian London.

But, if you want some fun this week, then you have to pick up the latest Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor (#2.5). Written by Robbie Morrison, it’s a “break the fourth wall” (no, wall, not dimension) classic – with lots of jabs at some favourite comic heroes, the Doctor himself and a certain well-known London comic store. “Prohibited Sphere”, indeed! Smashing fun from cover to cover and the art from Rachael Stott is knockout, too!

UK Newsagents Releases

As usual, don’t forget that despite some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles) MegaTOXIC and many others.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.

Some of you in certain areas of the country may also be able to pick up a copy of the new Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection, which is currently being road tested by Eaglemoss.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
