Something For The Weekend (w/c 25th July 2016) – Dredd versus Aliens … versus Rom the Spaceknight?

John McCrea provides this striking ROM versus Dredd variant cover for Dredd #8. part of a wider promotion from IDW to promote their new ROM book

John McCrea provides this striking ROM versus Dredd variant cover for Dredd #8. part of a wider promotion from IDW to promote their new ROM book

Sadly, despite the terrific cover by John McCrea above, Judge Dredd only battles Rom the Spaceknight – back thanks to IDW this week – in this one striking image. But the good news is that Mega City One’s favourite lawman is indeed battling Aliens – and Predator – in a Dark Horse mini series, penned by John Layman, featuring art by Chris Mooneyham, wrapped in a cover from Glenn Fabry.

Talking of Dredd, there’s plenty of thrills in store for 2000AD fans this week, as a new Judge Dredd tale kicks off in Prog 1991 (featuring a cover by Neil Roberts) as he resumes his hunt for serial killer PJ Maybe. John Wagner weaves the words and Carlos Ezquerra delivers the cracking opening salvo of the news story, in a Prog that also sees some an all-action episode of “Black Shuck: Sins of the Father” form Leah Moore, John Reppion and Steve Yeowell; and while the latest “Scarlet Traces” is very much a “for those of you who came in late” type episode, it’s simply so crammed with visual references that British comic and TV fans will recogniseI simply don’t care. Beautiful work from Ian Edginton and D’Israeli. Oh – and a teaser for a new story, “Hope” from Guy Adams and Jimmy Broxton? I’ll have that, please.

This week sees the continuation of some of Titan Comics hottest titles, including Templars #4, and the sell-out smash series Dark Souls #3. The Eleventh Doctor continues his adventures, too in Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor year 2 #11 –  a perfect jumping on point for new fans wanting to see what all the fuss is about. This brand new arc features the enigmatic War Doctor (as played on TV by the legendary John Hurt).

Rom #1 - Regular Cover

Rom #1 – Regular Cover

Over on the US comics side, in ROM #1 – the reason for the Dredd #8 cover promotion above (which includes ROM variant covers for GI Joe and Micronauts, among others) we’ve been invaded again and only a space knight can save us. Written by Chris Ryall, with art by Christos Gage and David Messina – plus regular cover by J. H. Williams – the new Rom series follows up on the  epic return in this year’s FCBD #0, the ongoing tale beginning in earnest as Rom’s war with the Dire Wraiths hits close to home in “Earthfall, Part One!” If you remember the original Rom comic (published by Marvel) then I’m sure you’ll be giving this a look out of curiosity.

UK Newsagents Releases

2000AD Summer Special 2016 - CoverThere are plenty of comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including 2000AD (this year’s Summer Special is also on sale now), The Beano, the new Danger Mouse comic, Commando (latest release intel here), Judge Dredd Megazine (see below), Panini’s superhero titles, Titan Comics superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who: Tales from the TARDIS (collecting their strips from the US format titles), Mega, TOXIC and many others.

Danger Mouse Magazine Issue OnePlus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is now on sale in many (but not all) Waitrose supermarkets and – at last, selected high street WH Smiths stores – and some comic shops (stockist list here) as well as available on subscription.

So let’s not get too downhearted by some British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour that only those of us over a certain age remember.

Hachette Partworks, whose partwork titles include Doctor Who: The Complete History and Judge Dredd: The Mega Collection, continue their How To Draw The Marvel Way, along with their re-release of their hugely successful part work, Marvel’s Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novel series.

Some of you in certain areas of the country may also be able to pick up a copy of the new Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection, which is currently being road tested by Eaglemoss.

Note that you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying Part Works some are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
