Here’s our list of both British and US comics on sale this week in comic shops (Wednesday 1st April 2015), and it’s a big week for 2000AD fans – and not just because Tharg has persuaded Brian Bolland to draw the cover of this week’s new Prog. This week’s issue is a perfect jumping-on point for all new, lapsed or curious readers, kicking off with the new Judge Dredd adventure, “Enceladus: New Life”, a sequel to the recent events on Titan, the penal colony for ex-Judges, as the clean-up begins.
Also in the issue are new series for old favourites, “Slaine: Brutania Chronicles [Book II]: Primordial” and “Strontium Dog: The Stix Fix”, in which familiar foes are on the trail of Johnny Alpha.
Recent favourites also return, including the excellent “Grey Area” from Dan Abnett (I’m sure he has cloned himself, judging by hom many books by him are out this week) and Mark Harrison, who first worked together way back when at Marvel UK, on the unpublished mini series Loose Cannons. (Oh, please, Marvel – commission the team to finish it!). “Grey Area” is set in a huge Global Exo Segregation Zone in Arizona, USA that acts as a quarantine and processing centre, for all new extra-terrestrial visitors.
Do not fear though, Earthlets, if you’re new to 2000AD, the ever-thoughtful, benevolent alien editor & founder, Tharg the Mighty, has provided full-page introductions to each series, giving detailed back-stories and character breakdowns, on each Thrill-packed adventure – it’s not called the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic™ for nothing!
Over at Titan Comics, they’re understandably excited about the launch of their Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor mini series (check out our sneak peek here). The story is off to a good start, written by Cavan Scott with some deft characterisation of the much-troubled Time Lord and companions and absolutely gorgeous art from Blair Shedd. There’s a lot of trails laid in the opening issue and little explained, but there’s no shortage of action or danger for the TARDIS team, and the series is off to a great start.
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

Writer:/Artist Darryl Cunningham Intriduced by Michael Goodwin
The US edition of Darryl Cunningham’s terrific Supercrash. Tracing the emergence of Ayn Rand’s philosophy of objectivism in the 1940s to her present-day influence, Darryl Cunningham uses Rand’s biography to illuminate the policies that led to the 2008-9 economic crash in the U.S. and in Europe, and how her philosophy continues to affect today’s politics and policies. Cunningham shows how right-wing conservatives, libertarians, and the Tea Party have co-opted Rand’s teachings, and its inherent contradictions, to promote personal gain and profit at the expense of the middle class. Cunningham ultimately delivers a devastating critique of austerity-driven economics.
